Jane Diaz: Mail Pouch Watercolors
Artist Jane Diaz discovered one of her favorite painting
subjects while looking for speakers for a Letterhead
meet-LetterRip, which was held in 2002 in Atlanta,
IL. Because the meet had a Route 66 theme, she though it
would be great to have a Mail Pouch barn painter do a
seminar that weekend, but she soon learned in her research
that the last Mail Pouch painter, Harley Warrick of Belmont,
OH, had passed away the spring.
Then she heard about Scott Hagan, who had known Harley and who was
then involved in painting the Ohio Bicentennial logo on one barn in
each of Ohio's 88 counties.
The research she had done on the internet relative to Mail Pouch
barns prompted her to print-out a number of images. That, and her
conversations with Scott, led her to begin painting watercolors of
Mail Pouch barns. Several of her works are shown here.
Jane has worked with her husband, Bill, at their sign business,
Diaz Sign Art, in Pontiac, IL, for the past decade. She has a B.A.
from Illinois State University, and originally taught kindergarten
through 12th grade art at local schools for about 13 years. It was
during this time that she first experimented with watercolors...
especially during the time she took time off to be home when their
children were young. She recently donated two of her watercolors to
an auction at the 2003 national Letterhead meet in Tomahawk, WI,
which was held to benefit the Rick Glawson Memorial Fund.
Jane and Bill have been attending Letterheads meets since
the Niles, MI national in 1989. "We've traded for some very
nice panels at the meets," she said. "I wanted to
contribute something, so I painted a couple watercolors
ahead of time as my panels and took them to the Atlanta, IL
meet. I got more than several offers to trade, which was
great and made me feel a part of. I also gave one to the
couple whose home we stayed at during the meet."
